Innova Starter Set

This disc golf starter set offers 5 discs at $50, making it a reasonable choice for those venturing into the sport. However, the disc selection might not be the most suitable for newcomers.

The inclusion of the Destroyer, with its high speed rating of 12, might be overwhelming for beginners with low arm speed. It tends to veer sharply to the left for right-handed backhand throws, which can be discouraging for someone just starting out. The Teebird, albeit at a more manageable speed of 7, still felt a touch too overstable for my liking, often overlapping in flight pattern with the Leopard. I’d recommend substituting the Destroyer and Teebird with the Archangel, which I bought separately. Its understable nature and speed 8 rating provide a better match for novices, allowing for greater control and distance.

The Leopard becomes an efficient choice once it’s broken in, producing a mostly straight flight, and the Roc3 follows suit. The Aviar putter is standard fare for the course. Ideally, a beginner set with the Aviar putter, Roc3 mid-range, Leopard fairway driver, and Archangel distance driver (excluding the non-essential mini) at a $35-$40 price point would be optimal. Maybe even a basic bag for an added $10 could enhance its appeal.

The set’s DX plastic is an economical choice, though it’s Innova’s least resilient material. While it wears in quickly, usually within 5-10 rounds based on your encounters with obstacles, it’s also prone to significant damage if, say, it encounters rough terrain or concrete. In terms of the plastic quality, it aligns with its price point.
